Oliver had just revealed to Laurel something he had dreamed about after being on the Island. He knew he had exaggerated it, but he wanted to create a lighter air between them. After having seen her after 5 years with all the tension built up, then telling her to stay away from him, followed by an awkward encounter in the courthouse to now showing up at her apartment . . . well, he just wanted to spend time with her. He knew it would take a while before everything was resolved between them. But she hadn't slammed the door in his face, nor told him to get out -- yet -- so he was going to take it. It had been her, a picture of her, the idea of her, that had kept him going for so long. In his weakest moments during the first few months on the Island . . . his mind had been on her and that desperate need to return to Starling to beg for her forgiveness. Things had changed though. He knew that the only way to protect her, was to distance himself from her. And yet, here he was, at her door, holding up a tub of icecream to see how she would react to his suggestion of eating it with him.
This was proof that he couldn't stay away from her. So many times he had been told on the island to forget about her: both Yao Fei and Slade had told him that. But he couldn't. He would continue to apologize for Sara . . . even though Laurel wouldn't know the true extent to how much Sara suffered, and exactly his apology entailed. She had been through far more than just drowning at sea, but it was not his place to tell her or Deteective Lance that. Instead, he just wanted to take those small steps in bringing her back into his life. Because even though he attempted to keep their lives separate, he couldn't, and wasn't going to try and fight that anymore. At least not right now. So all he could do was wait in anticipation for whether she was going to decline and tell him to leave, or whether she was going to get a couple of spoons and dig in.
