.:Name of Character:. Dinah Laurel Lance
.:Nick Name:. Laurel
.:Alias:. n/a
.:Age:. 28
.:Physical Appearance:. Standing a tall five foot seven, Laurel Lance is absolutely stunning. With her big dark eyes framed by long lashes, her full lips and long thick auburn hair, she could easily be featured on the cover of a magazine. Laurel is quite modest about her physical appearance, though she does enjoy looking presentable, dressing up, and she takes pride in the way she looks. Laurel is rarely seen without make up, and when she's dressing for work, there are always heels to accompany her outfit. She definitely knows how to dress herself, even when she's spending the day at home, or out getting groceries. It's a natural beauty that she doesn't need to try and emphasize.
.:Height:. five foot seven
.:Portrayed by:. Katie Cassidy
.:Personality:. Laurel is a fighter. Both in the court room and in life, she fights for what she wants. She fights for justice, she has a strong moral compass, and believes that she has to do something to make the world a better place. If she doesn't fight for the less fortunate, for those who don't have a voice, who will? In relationships, she fights, too. She wants the relationship, desperately, but she doesn't always feel as though she deserves it. She doesn't give up easily, on others, that is. On herself, well, that's another story. She's feisty, a little hot headed, but it's endearing. Most of the time. Even though she's in a position of power, she has a little bit of an issue with authority and being told what to do and what not to do. She's fiercely independent, and doesn't need anyone to take care of her, so she believes.
Underneath her tough, happy exterior, Laurel is a little bit of a mess. Losing a sister who slept with your ex boyfriend, who was presumed dead for five years, kind of does that to a person. She's got trust issues, first, but because of this, it's hard to let someone in. She doesn't think she needs anyone, and refuses to let anyone take care of her. She's too strong for that. She does a damn good job taking care of herself, but after losing Tommy, and Sara, and Oliver, well, there are only so many places a girl can turn to. You can only be so strong for so long.
She has a nasty habit of falling for bad boys, because she can't resist saving someone. That shows up in all aspects of her life, from her personal relationships to the court room. She has to save the innocent, because she failed Sara, and Tommy.
Lately, the guilt has been driving Laurel to drink, in excess some nights. That's a secret she keeps hidden from everyone, and one she would be humiliated if anyone discovered.
She has a tender side to her, too, when she can push through the guilt and the trust issues. She tries to see the best in people and believes everyone is innocent until proven guilty. When she cares for someone, she cares deeply, and has a hard time of letting go of the person, even if they've changed.
.:Strengths:. Arguing, seeing the good in people, organizing, fighting for what she believes in
.:Weaknesses:. Cooking, Oliver, feeling responsible for everyone and everything, being overly hard on herself
.:Special Skills:. Aside from being an expert in the court room, Laurel has been trained in hand to hand combat. She fends pretty well for herself when necessary, thanks to mandatory self defense classes from her younger years. She has a knack for seeing both sides of things, and for trying to see the best in people as well.
.:Birthplace:. Starling City
.:Family:. Quentin Lance (father), Dinah Lance (mother), Sara Lance (sister)
.:Occupation:. Assistant DA of Starling City
.:Current Location of Residence:. Starling City
.:History:.
Laurel was the first of two daughters born to Detective Quentin Lance and his beautiful wife Dinah. So named for her mother, and also her great grandmother - Dinah - Quentin picked her middle name, Laurel, after his mother, and it would be this alias she was called. Quentin adored his baby girl; becoming a father changed him, for the best. He softened, he protected her, he beamed. He was extremely proud of his first little girl - first steps, first words, to her first battle in the court room. Sara came along two and a half years later, completing the small family of four, and life seemed pretty perfect for the Lances.
While Laurel bonded with her mother, and loved her, she was always Daddy's Little Girl, from day one. Sara had a closer relationship with Dinah, but the family was very tight knit. Quentin did everything in his power to make sure his daughters were safe, were happy, had everything they could want or need. Both girls were sent to the prestigious prep school for middle and high school, and it was here that Laurel met Oliver Queen and Tommy Merlyn, whom she would consider her two closest friends for a very long time. Laurel was instantly attracted to Oliver, his dashing good looks and ability to literally charm the pants off whomever he pleased. Laurel was a bit of a challenge, but the two began dating in high school, and continued while she was off at college.
Tragedy struck during Laurel's second year at law school. Her sister had disappeared with Oliver on his family's boat and the boat wrecked, killing everyone on board. The news tore everyone in Starling City apart. Not only was her boyfriend dead, but so was her sister, and the two had been sleeping together behind her back. Mr. Queen was gone, leaving behind his wife and daughter, and everything went straight to hell from there. Quentin developed a strong drinking problem, and Dinah couldn't handle taking care of him, or Laurel, hiding the guilt she felt knowing Sara had gone with Oliver, so she left Laurel to pick up the pieces on her own.
Laurel threw herself into her schooling, and then into her work, taking care of her father as best she could. For five years, she believed Oliver and Sara to be dead, but now, things have changed. Oliver has returned, her mother believes her sister to be alive somewhere, and her father refuses to give up chasing the vigilante running his town known as The Hood. But with Tommy dead, Laurel's found herself following in her father's footsteps, as usual, turning to alcohol for some numbing relief.
Life was funny.
S'what the judge had said earlier, during a meeting in his chambers, after reconsidering some circumstantial evidence. Laurel hadn't thought much of it then, but now, as she sat slumped over at her desk, her head resting on her arm, dark glassy eyes staring off into the distance, she couldn't shake it. Life wasn't funny. Life was hard. It was full of pain. At this point, it seemed the only purpose of human life was to suffer, and Laurel felt she'd suffered far more than her share.
The crystal glass in front of her held the last few drops of amber liquid, her brain saturated with the rest. She wasn't convinced it helped, not really, but it made it easier to live with. Harder to care. Easier to sleep. For months, her dreams had been littered with Tommy's face, reliving nights spend tangled in sheets, or nights the three of them had snuck out in high school to go party. Sometimes she could hear him, but she spent hours running in circles, unable to find him. The worst was when the Hood appeared, and shot arrows into his chest. Her father would appear, tackle the Hood to the ground, but when he pulled the hood off, it was Laurel underneath. She'd wake up screaming, sweating, ready to crawl out of her skin.
With the whiskey, the dreams didn't come. Nothing came. She was perfectly numb.
